Adding Online Slip Booking to a Marina Website (Dockwa & Custom)

How we add online slip and transient booking to a marina website — Dockwa or Molo integration versus a custom reservation flow, and which fits you.

Boaters expect to reserve a slip the way they book a hotel — online, at 11pm, from the helm, without a phone call. If your marina website still says “call the dockmaster for availability,” you’re losing transient business to the marina down the ICW that took the booking while you were closed. The good news: adding real online booking to your site is a solved problem. The question is which route fits your operation.

The two honest paths

There are really two ways to put booking on a marina website, and they serve different marinas.

1. Integrate a marine booking platform (Dockwa or Molo)

Dockwa is the dominant transient-and-reservation network in the US; Molo (and Snag-A-Slip in some markets) compete on the management side. Their pitch: they handle availability, payments, contracts, and — critically — they bring their own audience of boaters already searching for slips. For most marinas doing meaningful transient traffic, that reach alone justifies them.

On your website, integration usually means one of:

  • An embedded booking widget — Dockwa’s reservation module dropped into a properly designed page on your site, styled to fit rather than looking bolted on.
  • Deep links from prominent “Reserve a Slip” buttons straight into your Dockwa listing, so the handoff feels native.
  • A booking-forward page design that surrounds the widget with the stuff that actually closes the boater: amenities, depth at MLW, max LOA, fuel, power, approach photos, and reviews.

The tradeoff: you’re on their rails and their fee structure, and the booking data lives partly in their system. For transient-heavy marinas, that’s usually a fair trade for the demand they deliver.

2. Build a custom reservation flow on your own site

If you’re primarily annual and seasonal contracts, run a waitlist, or have unusual rules — mixed slip sizes, tiered pricing, member-only sections, dry storage plus wet slips — a platform can feel like a straitjacket. A custom flow on your own site (WooCommerce Bookings, a bespoke availability calendar, or a purpose-built reservation app) gives you total control: your rules, your pricing logic, your data, your payment processor (Stripe direct, so you’re not stacking a second commission), and no per-booking cut to a third party.

The tradeoff is the reverse of Dockwa’s: you own everything, but you also bring your own demand. Nobody discovers a custom booking form the way they browse Dockwa. It shines for marinas whose bookings come from people who already know them.

How to choose

  • Mostly transient / overnight traffic? Lean Dockwa or Molo. The discovery network is the whole point, and a clean integration on your site captures the boaters who find you directly, too.
  • Mostly annual/seasonal, waitlists, or complex rules? A custom flow usually wins on control and long-run cost.
  • Both? Common answer: Dockwa for transient, a custom members’ area for contract holders to pay, renew, and manage their account. The two coexist happily on one well-built site.

What most marinas get wrong

They treat booking as a button and stop there. A boater deciding between two marinas wants specifics: controlling depth, max beam and LOA, amps and fuel, restroom and laundry, WiFi, fuel dock hours, and a clear approach with real photos or a chartlet. The booking widget converts far better when the page around it answers every question a captain has before committing. Getting that page fast on mobile matters too — half your reservations happen from a phone on the water with two bars of signal.

Payments, confirmations, and the back office

Whichever path you pick, the plumbing has to be right: instant confirmation email, a card charged or held cleanly, the reservation landing where your dockhands actually look, and a calendar that can’t double-book a slip. With a custom build we wire this into your existing tools. With Dockwa or Molo, we make sure the on-site experience is seamless rather than a jarring jump to someone else’s interface.
